Angel moves in

We have been thinking about it for a while and on Saturday finally made the decision to give foster care to a dog. So while we were at the K9 animal rescue, La Marina animal welfare charity shop, we left our details with Brenda, later in the day we got a phone call to tell us that there was a dog that needed a temporary home, So yesterday morning Brenda from K9 club and the dog arrived. She is a medium sized dog called Angel and after a short while she is settling in well. Fostering a dog is an easy process and no expences need to be incurred as food, bedding and any vets fees are covered. It is a great idea for people who would like a dog or cat but cannot through other commitments have one permanently, and of course it is great for the animals as they have a caring environment while a permanent home is found for them.

One Hour No Power

At midday on Sunday July 1st 2007 One Hour No Power are asking everyone concerned about the effects of climate change to simply turn everything (non-vital) off for an hour. That’s one hour with no cars, computers, TVs, etc. Through your support and lobbying we would also like as many businesses as possible to join in and publicly show their commitment to tackling climate change.
One Hour No Power aims to raise awareness of our collective ability to tackle climate change through our everyday lives.
This is a people powered event for everyone to help shape. Share your ideas for One Hour No Power by adding your comments to the event blog and find help with promoting the event locally on our ‘Join In’ page.
It’s up to you how you spend the hour. You could hold a sponsored event for your favourite environmental group, take to the roads on your bike, write your personal green action plan for the coming year or simply spend time with family and friends.
Please join in and switch off between 12-1 pm on Sunday 1st July.

Rights of Way, La Cañadas

In Spain there are 120,000 kilometres of rights if way known as Cañadas, these were granted by the King for the movement of animals and cattle between pastures, farms and markets, and for movement around the country, they are actually ancient footpaths which are between 20 and 75 metres wide, allowing room for grazing. It was not until around 1970 that the rise in the interest to protect the environment resulted in a movement to re-instate the traditional cañadas. The cause was about reasserting the Public Legality of the Right of Way, just as has happened in the UK with many of the old footpaths and bridleways. In 2003 there was a big demonstration in Madrid when a large flock of sheep and goats was driven along the exact route of a lost cañada, exercising legal rights, crossing a Golf Course before arriving in the very heart of the Spanish Capital.

There are 5 of these legal footpaths - Las Vias Pecuarias - in The San Miquel de Salinas area, they would probably the original tracks androads when San Miquel was just a small village. To see a map of these routes go to http://www.san-miguel-de-salinas.com/uk/map_v.asp there are signs to help you find the routes.
